1. Put all of your items in a place where they’re visible

In Marie Kondo’s Netflix series, she recommends that you should take all of your belongings and put them in a large pile. The reason that this is so important and powerful is because seeing what we have helps us understand just how much we have. You start to understand that you might have way more than you need.

This also makes it easier to sort through the things that you have. 

2. Begin to ask yourself a series of questions related to the outcome you want

A lot of times, people tend to focus on things that they don’t want. For example, a question that they might ask themselves while they’re decluttering is “What should I get rid of?” 

But instead of focusing on what you don’t want, focus on what you do want. Examples of questions to ask yourself include:

• What type of home or business do I want?
• How do I want my home or business to be?
• What items bring me joy?
• What items do I use the most?
• How can I use the storage space that I already have?

Remember, the goal is to bring out the items that you like best or which you use the most often so that those items are the focus. 

3. Begin decluttering

As Marie Kondo says, you might begin by placing items where they belong as you declutter. This means putting everything where you would like them to be. That way, you’re not waiting until the end to put things away. 

The reason why putting things in the place where they belong is so important is because this trains your brain. For example, one of the reasons why people end up with a messy home or business is because things aren’t placed in the areas where they belong. Instead, some people will wait for the last minute to put things away. This creates a bigger mess that will need to be dealt with. In cognitive psychology, this putting things away immediately follows the idea of the 5-minute rule. 

The 5-minute rule is based on the idea that you should immediately work on anything that can get done in 5 minutes. This prevents having those missed 5-minutes resulting in many hours of work.
